What is "Rainwater Harvesting"?
At present, when it rains, the water that flows from your roof into the gutters, down the drain-pipes and into the drains is taken away and treated, quite often along with the sewage!
Sometimes, the rainwater drains into rivers, and sometimes it is collected in storm drains. It is becoming apparent that these methods of rainwater collection and treatment are not sustainable. Rainwater harvesting systems intercept the water as it comes from the roof and down the drainpipe, and take it to a storage tank which is sited underground in your garden, where it is cleaned and pumped the short distance back into the house for use in washing machines, dishwashers, household cleaning purposes, baths, showers, toilet flushing, car washing and watering the garden. Rainwater harvesting in this way can actually yield, on average, up to 60% of your water usage needs. In addition, harvesting the rain that falls on your roof during periods of heavy rainfall means that there will be less pressure on the storm drains, reducing the possibility of localised flooding. During periods of dry weather, you will have enough stored water to ensure that you can keep your garden looking lush, and your car washed, using as many hosepipes and sprinklers as you like, without draining the water company's precious resources. And, if you are on a metered supply, it will considerably reduce the size of your quarterly bills as well!
