Making Rain Work For You

Rain is a completely free and valuable commodity that most of us allow to disappear down the drain. When we get too much, we have localised flooding. Too little, and we face a hosepipe ban and, in extreme cases, the possibility of rationing and collecting water in buckets from bowsers at the end of the street!

But if you were to capture the rain instead of letting it flow down the drain, you could use it for so many different tasks around the home and substantially reduce your reliance on mains water.

Graph showing average UK household water consumptionEven most of your waste water from activities like washing and bathing can be captured and reused for flushing toilets or watering the garden. This too will considerably reduce your need for mains water.

With the exception of drinking water which accounts for around 2% of your household water consumption, virtually everything else could be provided by capturing and reusing the rain that falls on your roof and recycling your household waste water.

As indicated by the illustration on the left, rainwater can be used for all washing, bathing, toilet and cleaning tasks, whilst greywater can also be used for toilet flushing, car washing and watering the garden.

These two capturing processes are called Rainwater Harvesting and Greywater Recycling.

Depending on the volume of rain in your region, you could potentially save up to 95% of your existing mains water consumption by combining both rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling. In addition, harvesting of rainwater from your roof can reduce the impact of stormwater on the public drainage system by up to 60% and help reduce the risk of localised flooding.

Rainwater...

  • is free
  • is "soft"
  • avoids the need for water softeners
  • produces a prolonged life for household appliances
  • chlorine and limescale free
Greywater...

  • is free
  • is ideal for flushing toilets, washing the car & watering the garden
  • is odour-free because it is UV filtered first
  • contains nitrogen which is beneficial to plant growth

The efficient use of a combination of rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling in your home will reduce your "carbon footprint" because a reduction in the use of mains water supply results in a reduction in the energy needed to provide it.
